About Us

Our Mission

Codetekkers.org is a nonprofit dedicated to teaching basic programming concepts to students from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups.  We have worked with numerous educational organizations  including Succeed2gether and IMANI - both in Montclair NJ, the Boys and Girls Club of Clifton, Young Scholars of Trenton, among others, to reach and teach our target group. Our vision is to get these students to see the beauty of coding by making it fun and enjoyable.  The name Code Tekkers is a simple mash up of the founder's two favorite things, namely coding and playing soccer.  Tekkers is soccer slang for skills or technique!

Our People

Code Tekkers is run by a group of dedicated volunteers who believe in our mission of making coding more accessible to students in underrepresented communities. We  believe that by demystifying the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Science (CS) to students in elementary and middle school is the best way for these students to get a glimpse of what is possible, and hopefully, finally fill in the diversity gap, and eliminate the biases that exist in AI today. Our volunteer teachers have a passion for computer science and are trained in our curriculum developed by our founder.

Our Founder

Koome Murungi is a high school senior at the Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA) in New Jersey and the founder of Code Tekkers. He has always been passionate about math and science, but discovered his love for computer science in high school. He was inspired to start Code Tekkers in 2020 after attending a selective summer program, AI4ALL, at Princeton University. He is especially interested in machine learning and cognitive science.

In addition to teaching kids coding, Koome is a full time member of a research group in the Brown University Physics Department where he is creating machine learning models that are attempting to classify dark mater. https://www.stephonalexanderlab.com

Koome is a passionate soccer player and joined the Montclair Kimberley Academy boys soccer varsity team as a freshman. He currently plays for his club team Cedar Stars Academy Newark.
